New speed limits

40 km/hr speed limit sign

In our December 2025 newsletter, AIDA welcomed the announcement by Surf Coast Shire that it had recommended speed limit reductions in Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven, Moggs Creek and Anglesea. They advised that reduced speed limits on residential streets would be implemented in early 2026 once approved by the Department of Transport. Unfortunately, the Great Ocean Road, the eastern end of Old Coach Road and Bimbadeen Drive were excluded from this review.

The Surf Coast Shire has now advised that implementation of the speed limit reductions was carried out in April of this year. AIDA was not consulted about this work including the number and location of roadside signage. The shire also advised that most speed limit signs were replaced on existing poles with additional signs required at the junction between residential streets and the Great Ocean Road. The proliferation of the signs at these intersections is particularly noticeable at the junction between Lialeeta Road and the Great Ocean Road.

The Surf Coast Shire 2015 Structure Plan for Aireys Inlet to Eastern View addresses the issue of signage under section 4.2 Coastal Village Character. Objective 2.3 seeks to ensure that signage respects the character of the area and minimises visual pollution. The shire has advised that they have removed some redundant signs as part of the implementation works. We would be interested to hear from members of any examples where roadside signage could be rationalised and improved.
